Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci visited Vipava? Yes, you read that correctly. To commemorate his research connections with the Vipava Valley, we have set up a permanent exhibition in the Lanthieri Wine Cellar.
This is the first permanent exhibition dedicated to the historical traces linking the Renaissance genius with the Vipava Valley. Historical sources confirm that the author of the most famous painting in the history of fine art, the Mona Lisa, visited the Vipava Valley and studied the Vipava River. The Leonardo Room presents his life and work alongside the Vipava Valley in Leonardo’s time. We are especially proud of the two exhibits that dominate the room: the air spit with a propeller and the distillation furnace with two alembics. On display is also an excerpt from the Codex Atlanticus, Leonardo’s manuscript, in which he wrote about the Vipava and Soča rivers. This is also where the new children’s adventure — the Da Vinci Funtrail Themed Learning Path — begins and ends.
You can visit the Leonardo da Vinci Room in the premises of the Lanthieri Cellar wine shop and the Vipava Tourist Information Centre during opening hours.
The Leonardo Room was arranged by the Municipality of Vipava as part of the official European Capital of Culture programme, within the Da Vinci Trail project, in cooperation between the Municipality of Vipava and the public institute GO! 2025.
